Steps to identifying the theme:

1. Read the text
2. Identify the story elements
3. Make a list of topics
4. Pick one topic to write a sentence about what the author believes about that topic
"The author believes _____ about ______(topic)."
(Do not use character names, theme should be universal, not just for the one story, and do not be too vague)
5. Cross off  "The author believes" to make it a theme statement.
