RL4.2 :Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.
Monday: Theme
Topic: The topic is the subject of the text. For example, friendship, family, nature, and adventure can all be topics. Theme: The theme is the main message or lesson of a text. It is what the author believes or wants you to learn about the topic. For example, family is important. Find this page and write the notes in your journals.
Steps to identifying the theme:
1. Read the text 2. Identify the story elements 3. Make a list of topics 4. Pick one topic to write a sentence about what the author believes about that topic "The author believes _____ about ______(topic)." (Do not use character names, theme should be universal, not just for the one story, and do not be too vague) 5. Cross off "The author believes" to make it a theme statement. 6. Back up you theme statement with text evidence
Tuesday: Summarizing
Summaries should be short and to the point. Only the main parts of the story should be includes.
